Makeshift

February 19th, 2008 by Sean Seamus :: see related comic

Twice I forgot some major article of catering waiter attire while commuting and somehow I always managed to find some solution en route. And it’s true, as well, that a certain co-worker, a drag queen, used black duct tape to cover her jeans and used the buffet table fabric for making her ties on the spot. How resourceful! No one was the wiser. Who knew I would only need such small supplies in my garment bag!

I believe it but it sounds pretty amazing. I really helped when I used to live near the Haight to grab articles in a thrift store such as bow ties and vests on the fly. My big thing is to forget to pack cuff links whenever I have that kind of shirt. I’ve tried twist-ties paper clips, safety pins. Duct tape is great for when the lining in your tux is hanging out. Other wise I choose to follow the emperor has know clothes tactic. I just pretend that nothing is amiss. Like what sneakers? You mean these leatherish rubber soled foot wear? Nothing is wrong here?

If you live for your art, then you probably have the infamous "day job". If so, you'll like "Diary of a Catering Waiter". It's my take on the catering industry, though anyone familiar with any service industry work, would appreciate the levels of weirdness that can happen among the martinis and gourmet food, tuxedoes and weddings, flowers and Napa wine. Always a surprising time to be had at any event. Stay tuned to find out about the hijinks involved with catering waiters, event planners, wedding crashers and all the lowly people waiting for the slice of catered food when the party ends.
