Running into a familiar person at an event can dramatically shape the life of the party for you, depending on whether the person is a positive or negative representation. When the person was an online flirtation, the scenario is wrought with mystery. Your job at the catering event is to serve, not to hide. But yet, does that person recognize you to begin with? In this case, would he recognize me in front of his boyfriend who forbade him from chatting online in the first place? Not likely. My mind raced through all the possible scenes that could play out. Of course, in the end, I forget how invisible the servers are to most who attend parties. But not to all.
At an event at Presidio Bowl in the Presidio in San Francisco, there was a fundraiser for AIDS. My shy sales manager for the event whispered out to me from behind curtains when i walked passed. She asked me to run an errand for her. She was hiding, having recognized a certain group of women she did not want to run into.
I’ve had coworkers fret about running into freelance clients or former teachers on the floor. Since many servers work in catering with the idea of it being a temporary way to make some extra money, there is some embarrassment when people from your other lives run into you. There is that internal need to do some explaining.
I knew of one coworker feigning sudden sickness to that he could go home instead of having to face someone undesirable on the floor.
However, with the nebulous situation of “Holycowsf”, I could only make my presence known to the person, and let him take it from there. After all, I’m just doing my job and cannot expect or presume anything.

It's my take on the catering industry, though anyone familiar with any service industry work, would appreciate the levels of weirdness that can happen among the martinis and gourmet food, tuxedoes and weddings, flowers and Napa wine. Always a surprising time to be had at any event. Stay tuned to find out about the hijinks involved with catering waiters, event planners, wedding crashers and all the lowly people waiting for the slice of catered food when the party ends.
