I have to admit, there is a lot of personal flexibility at a catering event. You may be assigned a job, a certain task for the course of the actual party, but how you maneuver through the evening, can be left up to you. It totally depends on the company and staff, and how long people know to trust you to do your part. With the ‘holycowsf’ situation, I was able to create an opportunity where there might not have been one otherwise. It wasn’t my job to serve hors d’oeuvres at this party, but i could get away with stealing a tray and doing a round for the sake of personal spying. However, this person of interest did not sit in my section of the room for the sit down dinner, so any other up close exposure was not easily arrangeable.
The personal flexibility that is possible at a catering gig is because of how social the job is. The elements of a party, no matter how planned, can change at will, morph into something more exciting or dreadful. The factors are limitless. This adds to a servers excitement or dread when a familiar presence is added to the festivities. While the server has a job to do, which includes acting pleasant, for the party-goers, the burden is to act like you’re having fun when you’d rather not be there. A much larger burden, especially when you’re not being paid to be there. It was clear that the person of interest in ‘holycowsf’ was coming along as the supportive spouse to a work-related party for the other.
Since he was doing his part to be there, for showing up, I wondered if at some point in the evening, he would recognize me. While his mind wandered with boredom, would he suddenly be slapped awake if I said something “familiar” as a point of online reference? I explored this further in the next two pages of the strip thread.
If you live for your art, then you probably have the infamous "day job". If so, you'll like "Diary of a Catering Waiter". It's my take on the catering industry, though anyone familiar with any service industry work, would appreciate the levels of weirdness that can happen among the martinis and gourmet food, tuxedoes and weddings, flowers and Napa wine. Always a surprising time to be had at any event. Stay tuned to find out about the hijinks involved with catering waiters, event planners, wedding crashers and all the lowly people waiting for the slice of catered food when the party ends.
